Wabi Sabi and your skin

Posted by Teresa Foo on

Wabi Sabi in a nutshell is finding beauty in imperfection. Wabi Sabi is like a state of mindfulness. Wabi Sabi is the appreciation of imperfections happening all around us in our daily lives. Being in the now, appreciate the simple things and all things imperfect. Not chasing the impossible and be someone we are not.

So how do we apply Wabi Sabi into skincare especially when perfect filter-like beauty is constantly being marketed to our face every time we look at our social media apps? First we need to be realistic. Most of us will have some form of skin issues either in the form of dry, oily skin, acneic skin, eczema or pigmentation. Only that lucky few will have the so called perfect skin, probably due to good genes. Accepting how our existing skin looks like and then asking the questions on how we can improve it so that the skin barrier will be a better one than before. Not perfect but better with less dry flaky skin, less shinier T zone, fewer acne eruptions and scars, better control of eczema flareups and less visible pigmentation.

When we learn to be more realistic, we will be better at making decisions within our own means and accept what can be done and acknowledge what cannot be change. Most importantly, you are leading your own life on your own terms. You define your own beauty with standards that are unique to you and not by some social media influencers or celebrities. Understanding Wabi Sabi and applying this concept to your own unique beauty is a form of self-care and self-love.
